Women’s History Month

Did you know Women’s History Month began as a local celebration in Sonoma County?

In 1978, the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women introduced the first Women’s History Week to coincide with International Women’s Day. The celebration became a movement, and two years later, the National Women’s History Project was founded in Santa Rosa. This project brought together a coalition of women’s groups and historians who successfully lobbied for national recognition. In 1987, Congress passed a law designating March as Women’s History Month.

At this month’s Open House, we’ll be celebrating the contributions women have made both in U.S. history and locally right here in Sonoma County.
